October 1994
Every five years a global student missions conference is
sponsored by the Sunday School Board’s Student Ministry De¬
partment in cooperation with the Foreign Mission Board, Home
Mission Board, Brotherhood Commission and Woman’s Mis¬
sionary Union.
The next student missions conference is “Mission 95,” and
it will be held Dec. 27-31, 1994, in Louisville, Ky. Between
4,000-5,000 college students, high school seniors, directors of
Baptist student ministry, church ministers with college students,
college Sunday School teachers, pastors and missionaries are
expected to attend. The theme for “Mission 95” is ‘That All
Peoples Might Sing His Praises.”
Pray for all preparations now being made for this confer¬
ence. Ask the Lord to give His leadership to all aspects of plan¬
ning. Pray that the Holy Spirit will begin to work in the hearts
of those students He will call out to go as missionaries to the
peoples of the world.
REQUESTS
AFGHANISTAN (central Asia). The Tajiks speak Dari Persian
(called Farsi in this country). A Farsi New Testament is available
and the Old Testament is being translated. Less than 10 percent of
the Tajiks, however, can read materials written in the Farsi
language. Pray that the Lord will call Christian literacy workers,
especially those trained in the Farsi language, to place their lives
and witness among this unreached people group.
BANGLADESH (southern Asia). Some of the Sylhetti Bengali
(an unreached people group) are among the poorest people in the
world. Health care is, for the most part, inaccessible. In this coun¬
try, there is one doctor per 6,166 patients. Ask God to call physi¬
cians, nurses, dentists and other health-care personnel to minister
to the overwhelming physical needs of these people.
BOLIVIA (west central South America). Pray for new mission¬
aries Kim and Sarah Edlund as they attend language school in
Costa Rica.
BOLIVIA (west central South America). Pray for personnel
who are using chronological Bible storying in various facets of
convention work.
BRAZIL (eastern South America). Pray for all Baptist churches
and their Sunday School programs. Pray that, through Bible study,
people will continue to grow spiritually and come to know God’s
will for their lives.
BRAZIL (eastern South America). Missionary Betty Ann Smith
asks you to pray for the multiministry project at Jardin Tropical
Mission in Sao Luis.
BRAZIL (eastern South America). Pray for the leaders of the
Ceara church to have wisdom and guidance as they make plans for
a three-year partnership effort with the Concho Valley association
in San Angelo, Texas.
CANADA (northern North America). Pray for Ervin Castillo,
pastor of New Life Hispanic Baptist Mission, and his wife,
Mercedes, who work with Hispanic immigrants to Canada. Al¬
though Hispanics share a common language, they come from dif¬
ferent cultural and religious backgrounds. Pray for the Lord to
give wisdom to Ervin and Mercedes as they try to reach their
Hispanic community for Christ.
CANADA (northern North America). Pray that Canadian South¬
ern Baptist Seminary in Cochrane, Alberta, will be able to develop
an adequate financial base. This is essential to provide for the on¬
going training of men and women to lead Canadian Southern Bap¬
tist churches.
CANADA (northern North America). Pray for the ministry of
Baptist representatives Jerry and Bobby Barnes, teachers at
Acadia Divinity College, Wolfville, Nova Scotia, as they help pre¬
pare leaders for Baptist churches in Canada’s Atlantic region.
CHAD (north central Africa). Missionaries Jim and Sharon
McPherson ask you to pray they would be able to stand the op¬
pressive heat there. They write: “In the house, temperatures aver¬
age 95 degrees day and night. Outside, in the shade averages 1 15
degrees and humidity is about 45 percent. The electricity is usually
off during the day, so pray that it would stay on day and night so
we can use the fans and computers.”
CHILE (western South America). Continue to pray for the safety
and outreach efforts of Tennessee Baptist volunteers as they come
to work with our Southern Baptist missionaries and Chilean Baptists.
CHILE (western South America). Missionaries Jim and Lori
Spikes ask you to pray for them as they begin their second term of
service. Pray that God will guide and bless their work as they seek
His will.
COLOMBIA (northwestern South America). Pray for the people
who live in Florida, Colombia, as they may be facing floods due to
full lakes and continued rainfall.
