February 1999
The mention of Georgetown, Guyana, immediately stimulates
memories of Jim Jones and the horrible triumph of darkness
in the mass suicide at his cult headquarters there many years
ago. When you think of Georgetown now, though, I want you to
rejoice over what God is doing in answer to your prayers and
through the steady ministry of missionary Polly Scott.
Last June in the Global PrayerGratn, we asked you to pray for
Polly's weekly women's discipleship class. Meeting each Tuesday
afternoon, Polly teaches the word of God and guides the women
into an understanding of God's love and sacrifice for them in
Christ. Polly says that they average about ten in the group each
week, and since you prayed, four Hindu women and two Muslim
women have received Jesus. One older lady, who was saved the
month after you prayed, has been so faithful that she has missed
only one study.
Recently this lady came hurrying into the study. The others
asked her where her shoes were. Looking down she realized that,
in her rush to get company to leave so that she could come to Bible
study, she had gotten everything but her shoes. She had been so
eager to get to Bible study that she had run several blocks barefoot¬
ed! As you rejoice and give thanks, let's pray that people in all of
this month's countries will be just as eager to learn about Jesus.
Expectantly,
Randy Sprinkle, Director
International Prayer Strategy Office
1MOSSI OF BURKINA FASO. Pray for guidance for a
volunteer team from Georgia as plans are made to build a
dormitory at the Koudougou Pastors' School and to conduct Bible
schools in rural areas in February.
URUGUAY (southeastern South America).
Missionary Kathy McNair writes: "Give thanks for the 38 students
who finished the first year at the School of Missions in Montevideo.
Many of them took all of the courses offered, and two were given
certificates for outstanding work. Pray for the trustees as they plan
the second year, which begins in March 1999."
AUSTRALIA (between South Pacific and Indian
Oceans). Please pray for several seekers who attend Crows Nest
Japanese Christian Church in Sydney. They are close to making a
decision for Christ.
2 CAMBODIA (southeast Asia). Opportunities exist to
place English teachers in a high school in the capital city. These
teachers will train both students and faculty. Pray that God will pro¬
vide the personnel to fill these positions and that they will impact
both students and faculty with the good news of Jesus.
SHAWIYA BERBERS OF NORTH AFRICA. An
emphasis called TOO Points of Light' is planned for 1999. Seventy
volunteers are needed to go to Europe in June to pass out New
Testaments, jesus films, and children's books. This is a an exciting
opportunity for beginning an indigenous church planting movement
among the Shawiya Berbers and eight other Last Frontier people
groups. Pray that volunteers will respond to God's call to this proj¬
ect. Others are asked to pray that the Lord will be lifted up and will
draw men to Himself.
3ZERMA OF NIGER. Please continue to pray for this un¬
reached people group and those who are searching for land to
rent for the church starts in Kwaara Taji. Pray for God's leadership
in all decisions as these churches form.
INDONESIA (southeastern Asia). Please pray that
God will open the way and provide for the Surabaya Baptist Uni¬
versity to purchase a school complex. The board of trustees saw a
place that seems ideal. They do not know if it is for sale, but it has
stood vacant for two years. This complex was used as a Christian
school, giving it a history of being Christian. It is in an area near five
other universities, but is surrounded by rice fields, so there are no
close neighbors to complain about it being Christian.
4 KARACHI, PAKISTAN. Give thanks to God for a local
Christian couple who traveled to another city to teach. There
they had a "divine appointment" with a 20-year-old girl who accept¬
ed Jesus as Savior. Pray for the growth and safety of this new believ¬
er who is planning to be baptized.
ZAMBIA (south central Africa). The Barotse Flood
Plain stretches about 20 miles on either side of the Zambezi River and
is the traditional home of the Lozi people of the Western Province.
Missionaries Daren and Shawna Davis, who live in Mongu on the
eastern edge of the Flood Plain, often make a four-hour trip across 75
miles to the small town of Kalabo, which has very little evangelical
witness. Please pray that the Davises will see where God is already
working in this town as they seek to bring to it an evangelical witness.
5HOKKIEN OF SINGAPORE AND MALAYSIA.
Pray for the fishing village of Kukup, Malaysia, with about 3,000
Hokkein. This spring, the first convert of the village professed faith
in Christ. Pray for members of a Baptist Hokkien Congregation as
they share their faith with these villagers.
SLOVAKIA (eastern Europe). Baptist representatives
Craig and Glenda Averill, who minister in Banska Stiavnica, are giv¬
ing thanks to God that the booklet entitled The Eternal Life went to
the printers. Craig will use it to teach church members how to share
their faith. Some pastors are eager for their people to learn how to be
witnesses. Pray for Craig as he uses the booklet to teach. Ask the
Lord to lead and to provide clarity as the material is presented.
