April 1995
1995 Day of Prayer and Fasting for World Evangelization,
6:00 p.m., June 2 to 6:00 p.m., June 3. Each year Southern
Baptists and other Great Commission Christians worldwide hold
a day of prayer and fasting for some of the world’s 3.9 billion
lost people. The focus of this year’s prayer emphasis is the Hui
of China. During the past several years, seven Hui out of a pop¬
ulation of more than 8.5 million have been clearly identified as
converts to Christianity. While others may exist, these seven
have made themselves known and are seeking ways to express
their new freedom in Christ. Make plans to have a Day of Prayer
and Fasting in your church. A free packet, available April 1,
1995, will help you promote this emphasis. The packet includes
a prayer guide focusing on Muslims in Asia with an insert high¬
lighting the Hui, The Commission magazine coverage on the
Hui, an eight-minute video featuring the Hui, plus other items
appropriate for promoting this emphasis. To order, call Custo¬
mer Services at 800-866-FMB1 (800-866-3621). Or write Custo¬
mer Services, Foreign Mission Board, P.O. Box 6767, Richmond,
VA 23230-0767. Please allow two weeks for delivery.
REQUESTS
ALBANIA (southern Europe). Join Baptist representatives Gale
and Leslie Hartley in praying for a journeyman or for a two-year
volunteer to come to Albania to teach their three sons, Timothy,
Aaron and Asa.
ARGENTINA (southern South America). Pray for the small
congregation in Los Toldos. There has been economic depression
in this area, due to flooding last year. Pray that this mission and all
the missions and churches in Argentina will continue witnessing
and leading people to Christ.
BELARUS, COMMONWEALTH OF INDEPENDENT
STATES (between eastern Europe and Russia). Baptist repre¬
sentatives Larry and Martha Pritchett ask you to pray for them and
four new missionary families as they study Russian and learn to
understand the Russian culture.
BELGIUM (northwestern Europe). Pray for the new church
started in Waterloo, Belgium, which gathers each Sunday in the
Comfort Inn. Pray for these members to reach many people for
Jesus Christ, our Lord. Ask the Lord to send a permanent pastor to
come to this English-speaking Baptist fellowship.
BELIZE (Central America). Pray for the salvation of Sandra,
wife of the lay leader of Orange Walk Baptist Church. She is of
Jehovah’s Witnesses background and has shown much more
openness to the gospel in recent days.
BRAZIL (eastern South America). Missionary Eddy Hallock
reports the army is now on the streets of Rio attempting to fight
the drug traffickers. The violence has increased. Pray for the Lord
to grant protection.
BURUNDI (east central Africa). Although Burundi has dropped
out of the news, things are still happening and conditions are still
very unstable. As the Dennis McCalls left Burundi, only two of
the 21 “mother churches” were meeting regularly. It has been esti¬
mated that more than 500 Burundian Baptists have died in the last
year, and many Baptist leaders are currently in hiding. Sixteen
church buildings have been destroyed, but during all of this tur¬
moil, there were more than five new mission churches started.
Give thanks to the Lord for His provision and grace.
CANADA (northern North America). Pray that Robert and
Leslie, two Native American leaders at Redboine Baptist Church in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, will continue to be faithful in their involve¬
ment with the children’s ministry of their church and that they will
serve as models for other Native American men in the church.
CHILE (western South America). Pray for the Community Chris¬
tian Church of Nunoa, Chile, as it plans to use its new location as a
community center. Pray the congregation will be able to meet com¬
munity needs and share the gospel through after-school activities
for children, seminars on family life and senior citizens’ ministry.
COSTA RICA (Central America). The San Pedro church, next
door to the University of Costa Rica, is in the process of studying
and planning for future student ministry. The Youth Society has
elected new officers, an adult support team is being formed and
plans are being put into place for using the student center to maxi¬
mum effect. Pray that all involved will have a clear vision of
God’s design and purpose in this ministry.
ECUADOR (northwestern South America). Pray for mission¬
ary Bob McNamee as he leads the seminary in Quito. Pray for
continued healing of relationships among students and faculty and
for God to call out more leaders willing to train for the ministry.
EL PASO, BAPTIST SPANISH PUBLISHING HOUSE. Pray
that God will use the literature and books from the Baptist Spanish
Publishing House to help spread the gospel in the Spanish-speaking
world. The sale of literature and books continues to be very slow.
Pray that God will open new markets for these materials. The pub¬
lishing house will be celebrating its 90th anniversary in 1995.
ETHIOPIA (eastern Africa). Missionaries David and Debbie
Brownfield ask you to pray that they would become fluent in the
Amharic language and be effective communicators with the
Ethiopian people.
