Extracts of letters from Rev. B. W. Drayton [sic], September 1853, and Brother Murray, April 21-22, 1853

AFRICA LIBERIAN MISSIONS Cape Palmas Rev. B. W. Drayton, in his report up to the lsl of September, writes of cheering prospects in the mission at Cape Palmas. Four persons had been baptized, and others were inquiring in reference to spiritual things. He says “the recent display of his mercy taught me more than ever the estimate in which the Lord holds his people and his cause. All was joy and gladness, and the effect was seen in the conviction and conversion of sinners. The native station is undergoing a reformation. We can but labor with constancy. The result we shall certainly see. Pray for me and the interest here.” □ □□□ Sinou From the stations at Sinou, we have received encouraging statements up to the 5lh of September. Four persons have followed their Lord in the ordinance of baptism. From brother Murray we received a detailed report of his labors, from which we extract the following: April 21-1 left home to make a short tour to some of the native towns. On my way I stopped at Lexington. There being no meeting-house for our denomination, I engaged a private house to meet in at night. I was, however, kindly offered the use of the Methodist meeting house. We had a good attendance. The hearers were very attentive. Text, John, 3d chapter, 16th and 17th verses. April 22 - I left Lexington this morning with brother Montgomery of the M. E. Church, and brother William Harlston, the interpreter, for the native town. In the vicinity of Lexington, our walk was rather disagreeable, owing to a shower of rain about daylight. We were soon wet from the knees down. The path was rather winding, through tall bushes, such as native roads in general are. However, we finally got through, and entered the town of one of the chiefs, “Sinou Jack.” He is quite advanced in life. He appeared happy to see us, and listened with great attention to me.
