Journal of Brother J. H. Cheeseman
Having visited, as one of the superintending committee, the mission at
Cape Palmas, brother Cheeseman; upon returning to his station at Edina, thus
refers to his visit at Sinou, and appeals for an increase of laborers:
Sept. 25 - At Harper, making arrangements for leaving. At
2 o’clock we were again on board, and soon the sails of the barque
were unfurled to the wind and we were on our way homeward.
Anchored at Rocktown, fearing to venture further, as a very
dangerous reef of rocks some miles at sea, were just ahead.
Sept. 26 - At day light our anchor was weighed, seas
heavy, winds boisterous. In the evening at 8 'A o’clock, we
anchored off Blue Barra near Sinou. How our hearts were drawn
out in devout thanks to God for his protecting care.
Sept. 27 - The boats being launched, we were soon seen
making our way to the shore though some miles from the entrance
of the Sinoe river. After an hour or two we were safely in Sinoe.
We made our way to our friend and brother Murrays and
proposed after some friendly salutations, taking a tour up the river
to the middle settlement. While preparations were being made, we
visited the bedside of a dying Christian; he was calm, and could
smile in death. Then could we say truly:
Jesus can make a dying bed,
As soft as downy pillows are, &c.
We visited the settlement, was much pleased with all that
we had seen. Learned that the dying Christian now sleeps in Jesus.
“Blessed are they that die in the Lord from henceforth, yea, says
the spirit, for they rest from their labors.”
Sept. 28, Sabbath morning - This morning feel much
peace. 1 1 o’clock A. M. - Preached from Philipians, 3rd chap. 7-
10 verses.
2 o’clock, P. M. - Attended the funeral of the departed
saint. 7 o’clock - Preached from Isaiah, 35th chap., 6th verse.
After preaching, 10 persons manifested great anxiety for their
souls, and solicited the prayers of Christians. Oh, that the Lord
would bring them savingly to a knowledge of himself.
