Extracts from the Journal of Brother Cheeseman, July 5-10, 1853

Edina The reports from Edina are full of encouragement. We shall hereafter refer to particulars respecting schools, &c. The following relates to a meeting continued for several days. Brother Cheeseman writes: Edina, Tuesday, July 5 - The church met for prayer, and received one candidate for baptism. 7th - At night regular preaching. Indications of the Spirit of God being present. 8th - The church met this evening for a lecture, on Christian Unity and Brotherly Intercourse, by brother Cheeseman. 9th - Pursuant to a resolution passed in conference, the church convened to hold a protracted meeting. Preaching in the forenoon by brother Davis, afternoon by bro. Hill. After preaching, the church convened in conference, the door being open for members. The committee recommended a little girl, the daughter of our deacon, R. M. Page, being only between eight or nine years old. She looked like an angel, and spake with a firmness becoming riper years of the dealings of God with her, and testified of her faith in Jesus Christ as her Saviour. Every heart was melted: the tears involuntarily flowed from every eye, and none could dare forbid water to one who gave such evident marks of repentance toward God, and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Surely it might well be said, “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast ordained praise.” God works mysteriously, and blessed be his name. “Praise the Lord for his goodness and mercy.” To-night preaching. Sinners appeared pricked to the heart. Prayer was made by the church for those who manifested a desire for it by showing themselves. To-day the exercises were of the most delightful character. 10th - Much interest manifested in the prayer meeting this morning. Noon, preaching by brother Davis. After preaching proceeded to the river, where the two candidates were immersed by brother Cheeseman; a scene more solemn and interesting was never witnessed in Liberia.
