AFRICA Monrovia Station The following from Rev. H. Teague, pastor of the church at Monrovia and missionary of the Board, under date of March 10, will furnish information concerning the state of things, not only at the capital of the Republic, but in different parts of the colony: “Knowing the interest you feel in everything that concerns the kingdom of our blessed Redeemer, and your ardent desire for the more rapid and wide extension of those scriptural practices and ordinances which are peculiar to our denomination, I make bold to give you a succinct account of the state of our churches here. We have in Liberia thirteen churches - twelve in Liberia proper and one in Cape Palmas. Communicants, 630. There are about eighty members having letters from the churches in America. Of these not more than twenty have attached themselves to any church, the rest having been prevented by the bustle of landing and removing up the river. It is expected they will all shortly attach themselves to some church in the vicinity of their location. We may safely treble this number as to the stated hearers of our preachers. Here there are nearly two thousand souls in this small community constantly looking up to us for instruction and receiving from our mouth the law of Christ. I say two thousand, but our occasional hearers greatly exceed that number. So, sir, you can see our responsibility and sympathize with us in our arduous toil. Our churches have indeed passed through a fiery ordeal. At one time their glimmering, flickering light seemed at the point of extinction, but God, in his infinite mercy, came to our relief, verifying the poetic adage, “The mount of danger is the place, Where God displays delivering grace.” “The heretofore barren and sterile waste, where naught was seen but the melancholy forms of withered herbage, is again blossoming and budding as the rose, and clothing itself with vernal beauty. Our members are again returning to their posts and their duty, and, as a consequence, our churches are assuming a more respectable and commanding attitude. They are now looked upon by others with an altogether different set of feelings from those with which they were regarded some three or four years ago. The
